    This one-month advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) is an elective patient care component of experiential learning. This rotation is an introduction to the growing emphasis on transitions in care that is associated with disease management. This experience is designed to enhance the student pharmacist’s knowledge and ability to individualize didactic course material to a specific patient. The student will be responsible for applying appropriate pharmacologic therapy specific to patient diseases encountered and enhancing communication skills through patient and health care provider education and facilitation of continuity of care.

    This one-month advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) is an elective rotation. It is the classification for APPEs involving the Indian Health Services, the United States Army, and the United States Air Force. This APPE involves, but is not limited to, direct patient care ensuring optimal healthcare delivery, application of clinical knowledge in management of acute conditions and chronic disease states, and the delivery of pharmaceutical care to the respective patient population. The Government APPE provides the opportunity for student pharmacists to practice pharmacy outside the scope of traditional community and institutional settings. Student pharmacists are able to apply knowledge of pharmacotherapy in a unique setting that integrates both community and institutional pharmacy practice. Student pharmacists utilize communication skills by offering patient counseling on medications and by communicating with other healthcare providers as part of an interprofessional team.

    A one-month advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) required rotation conducted in an institutional pharmacy, most often a hospital. This rotation will build upon the knowledge and skills previously learned in the IPPE institutional rotation. During this expereince, the student pharmacist will develop an understanding of health-systems and the role and function of pharmacy within that system. The student pharmacist will also gain experience with the day-to-day pharmacy operations. Topics will include hospital pharmacy organization, work flow and personnel, prepartation of sterile and non-sterile formulations, packaging and labeling operations, inpatient drug distribution systems, quality assurance, drug storage, and inventory control. Issues surrounding medication safety in the environment and the national safety goals will be addressed.
