PED3 4130/F - Pediatric Pulmonology Cr Hrs: 3.5, 7 Session Length: 2 and 4 weeks
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3.5 or 7 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. This elective provides students an opportunity to participate in the evaluation and treatment of patients with chronic and acute respiratory problems, severe asthma and cystic fibrosis. During the rotation the student will have the opportunity to see pulmonary patients in both the out-patient and in-patient setting. The student will become familiar with pulmonary function testing and other aspects of respiratory care. There will be an opportunity to observe flexible bronchoscopy on a variety of patients from infancy to adolescence. Attendance of morning report and grand rounds is encouraged. There will be an open book self-paced examination.

PSY 40120 - Junior Internship in Adult Psychiatry Cr Hrs: 6 Session Length: 4 weeks
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The student will have responsibility for 4-6 patients per week depending on census. Students will do the initial workup and present their findings to their Attendings and/or residents. Students will take ownership of their patients, but maintain close supervision. Daily team meetings; other teaching conferences as available on each site. Students will not be assigned to night call. However, students are welcome to join faculty and on-site staff for emergency triage and evaluation activities, if available. Weekend duties (rounds) will be determined by the individual sites.

This eight-week clerkship encompasses General, Minimally Invasive, Emergency General, Vascular, Cardiothoracic, Transplant, Pediatric, and Trauma Surgery with options for ENT, Neurosurgery, Urology and Orthopedics upon request and with approval from those departments. The objective of this clerkship is to familiarize the student with the basic pathophysiologic, diagnostic and therapeutic modalities involved in the art and science of surgery. The fundamentals taught in this rotation will be of benefit to students even if they do not choose a field of surgery as a career. In addition to the clinical involvement, each student is involved in several small group conferences as well as a didactic lecture series delivered by members of the faculty. The student is also involved in several skills labs as well as student presentations, basic science conferences, grand rounds sessions, and some outpatient participation. SUR 35020 - General Surgery CE Cr Hrs: 3, 6 Session Length: 2 and 4 Weeks
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving either 3 or 6 credit hours. This career exploration course (CE) will allow third year medical students to explore the general surgery discipline as a potential career choice. Students will be expected to attend weekly conferences, clinics and surgical seminars. Students will also participate in the 24 hour call shifts assigned by the department. The objective of this clerkship is to familiarize the student with the basic pathophysiologic, diagnostic and therapeutic modalities involved in the art and science of surgery. They will demonstrate their ability to work as part of a surgical team by presenting cases, developing differential diagnosis and formulating plans for patient work-ups and treatments.

SUR 35075 - Peripheral Vascular Surgery CE Cr Hrs: 3, 6 Session Length: 2 and 4 weeks
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving either 3 or 6 credit hours. This career exploration course (CE) will allow third year medical students to explore this discipline as a potential career choice. Program participants are assigned to staff physicians. Patients with vascular (arterial and venous) diseases on the surgery service at Erlanger Hospital as well as private patients serve as case material. The spectrum of diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease is covered. Participants are expected to present patients during daily rounds, attend the surgical conferences each week and attend vascular clinics. Participants will participate in the 24 hour call nights assigned by the department and are expected to understand underlying pathophysiology and develop patient treatment plans. They will also help guide the case presentations in vascular surgery done by the M3 core students.

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. Students in this junior internship will be assigned advanced clinical responsibility, under the direct supervision of the faculty, in the surgical management of patients including pre-operative work-up, operative management, and post-operative care. The student will take regular call rotations with residents; will assist in surgical operations, conferences, weekly clinics, and monthly seminars. They will help guide the case discussions in done by the M3 core students and will be expected to give a guided presentation to M3 peers.

This junior internship is to provide an environment with strict faculty supervision dedicated to the education of medical students in the medical and surgical management of critically ill patients, to enhance the development of technical skills and knowledge for the evaluation and treatment of the critically ill patients, and to teach medical students to function as an effective member of a critical care management team. Student will be assigned at least four, 24 hour call nights over the four-week period.

SUR 45045 - Plastic Surgery Cr Hrs: 3, 6 Session Length: 2 and 4 weeks
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3 or 6 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The purpose of this course is to introduce the subspecialty of Plastic Surgery to the student at a first-hand level. The student will become intimately involved in a large volume practice overlooking a Plastic Surgery training program. Specific subjects covered are: Wound Healing, Soft Tissue Injuries, Tumors of the Skin, Tumors of the Head and Neck, Burn Therapy, Diagnosis and Management of Facial Fractures, Cleft Lip and Palate, Craniofacial Deformities, the Hand, and Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery. Conferences will include weekly Trauma Rounds (Monday) and Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds (Wednesday). M&M and Indications Conference take place once a month following Trauma Rounds (Monday), and Journal Club takes place twice monthly following Trauma Rounds.

SUR 45075 - Peripheral Vascular Surgery Cr Hrs: 6 Session Length: 4 weeks
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. Program participants are assigned to staff physicians. Patients with vascular (arterial and venous) diseases on the surgery service at Erlanger Hospital as well as private patients serve as case material. The spectrum of diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease is covered. Participants are expected to present patients during daily rounds, attend the surgical conferences each week and attend vascular clinics. Participants will participate in the 24 hour call nights assigned by the department and are expected to understand underlying pathophysiology and develop patient treatment plans. They will help guide the case presentations in vascular surgery done by the M3 core students and will be expected to give a student presentation to M3 peers.

URO 45030 - Urology Cr Hrs: 3, 6 Session Length: 2 and 4 weeks
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3 or 6 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. This rotation will familiarize the student with basic urology exam, diagnosis and treatment of common urological problems i.e. voiding dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, incontinence, pediatric urological conditions, and stone disease. Students will be directly involved in the diagnosis of planning the evaluation of common urology problems noted above. The student will be trained in minor GU procedures like Foley placement and cystoscopy. The student will be supervised at all times by residents and/or faculty. The student is expected to participate in all urology conferences and prepare a formal presentation at end of rotation. URO3 4010/F - Urology Cr Hrs: 3.5, 7 Session Length: 2 and 4 weeks
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3.5 or 7 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. This rotation will familiarize the student with basic urology exam, diagnosis and treatment of common urological problems i.e. voiding dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, incontinence, pediatric urological conditions, and stone disease. Students will be directly involved in the diagnosis of planning the evaluation of common urology problems noted above. The student will be trained in minor GU procedures like Foley placement and cystoscopy. The student will be supervised at all times by residents and/or faculty. The student is expected to participate in all urology conferences and prepare a formal presentation at end of rotation. PAS 601 - Family Medicine I Cr Hrs: 4 (4 weeks) This supervised clinical practice experience/rotation is designed to introduce the student to the practice of primary care family medicine. This consists of providing comprehensive, continuing medical care to all members of the family. The entire person is considered within the realm of family, employment, society and recreation. The rotation will provide opportunities for the student to be responsible for patients of all ages, from the initial visit through possible hospitalization and follow-up. The student will have the opportunity to perform physical exams, develop a differential diagnosis, order and interpret appropriate diagnostics, propose a treatment plan, and provide patient education on diagnosis, prevention and health maintenance of disease processes.

PAS 605 - General Surgery Cr Hrs: 4 (4 weeks) The emphasis in this rotation is on common procedures and disorders encountered in the General Surgery setting. Students will learn pre and post-operative care of the surgical patient; the student will also obtain experience in the operation room arena through active participation in surgical cases. PAS 609 - Behavioral Medicine Cr Hrs: 4 (4 weeks) In this rotation, students will be exposed to common psychosocial and substance abuse conditions encountered in the primary care setting. Focus will be on recognizing and understanding the development and presentation of these behaviors and how to provide interventions and treatment. Development of clinical counseling skills is emphasized. Students participate in field assignments by attending various group meetings, i.e., AA, weight watchers, hospice, or other support groups.
