MED1 4080/F - Gastroenterology

Cr Hrs: 3.5, 7
Session Length: 2 and 4 weeks

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3.5 or 7 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. This elective is designed to provide the student with a broad exposure to the subspecialty of general clinical gastroenterology (including hepatology). About 40% of the student’s time will be spent in the out-patient setting, where he/she will learn how to diagnose and manage a variety of common gastrointestinal complaints seen in the ambulatory patient. About 40% of the elective will be spent on an in-patient service at one of the UT Teaching Hospitals, where the educational emphasis will be on general consultative gastroenterology and in the management of acute GI disorders. The remaining time will be spent in the endoscopy suite, where the student will be exposed to the technical aspects of gastroenterology, and in didactic teaching sessions, which will include pathology, pathophysiology, and clinical conferences.
