SUR 40160 - Junior Internship in Vascular Surgery

This is a face-to-face clinical rotation. The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. Students will spend their four weeks working closely with individual vascular surgeons, while participating as functioning members of the house officer team. Students will enhance their physical examination with particular attention to the vascular system. Students will gain experience with and basic understanding and interpreting non-invasive and interventional vascular studies, including vascular lab studies {Ultrasound and noninvasive physiologic studies), CT scan, MRI, and angiography. Students will improve knowledge of common vascular!’or pathologies, including .carotid artery stenosis, aortic aneurysm and peripheral vascular occlusive disease. Students will participate in 2-3 days In clinic over the course of the rotation, depending on the weekly schedule of inpatient duties and operative cases. Students will build on core surgical clerkship skills and Improve basic open and endovascular surgical skills. They will have some responsibility for a minimum of 15 patients/ week, with opportunities to see more based on their skill and interest level. Students will have full responsibility for patient care .with supervision. Direct supervision will be required for all hospital encounters and procedures. Indirect supervision with direct supervision immediately available will be provided for hospital or clinic encounters with the expectation that the students will report assessment of the patient and proposed plan to the attending physician or resident. There will be daily morning rounds; weekly Morbidity, Mortality, & Improvement, Surgical Education Conferences (Grand Rounds), and Medical Student Conferences; bl-monthly Basic Science Conferences, Skills/Sim Lab Sessions, Vascular Ward Rounds, and monthly Vascular Conferences. Upon completion of this rotation, residents will be able to safely manage the initial care of patients with vascular problems. This will be demonstrated by the ability to use knowledge and skills to assess a patient’s condition efficiently and accurately, prioritize the patient’s needs, recognize when the patient’s needs are beyond the knowledge and skills of the resident, and ensure that optimal care is provided at all times.
