Students will be supervised by residents and Family Medicine faculty. Session Length: 2 and 4 weeks

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3 or 6 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The primary purpose of this clinical experience is for fourth year medical students to actively participate in ambulatory and/or hospital patient care in a family practice setting. Possible practice sites may include urban or rural FM clinics, nursing homes, patient homes, emergency rooms and hospitals. Student responsibilities will include interviewing patients, conducting physical examinations, reviewing laboratory and diagnostic data and developing management plans in conjunction with the preceptor. • FME 45012 - Palliative Care

    Cr Hrs: 3, 6
Session Length: 2 or 4 weeks

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3 or 6 credit hours.  The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. This rotation allows the medical student to explore the sub-specialty of palliative medicine and care for the seriously ill patient. For this rotation, in the outpatient setting, the cancer patient receiving active treatment of either surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy is the predominant population, while inpatient a variety of seriously ill patients are served. Palliative medicine, as practiced both in and out of hospice, has, like all other specialties, a distinctive approach and body of knowledge. While we will seem to be seeing patients in much the same way as on your other clinical rotations, we will attempt to show you what makes palliative medicine different and, to us, special. Through an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care, the rotation is developed to provide supervised opportunities for students to explore and develop clinical and interpersonal skills, knowledge, professional attitudes, and practical experience to use in future practice.

  • IDE 45070 - Transforming Healthcare Delivery

    Cr Hrs: 6
    Session Length: 4

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours.  The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The University of Tennessee Medical Center has been engaged in a decade long commitment to transforming healthcare delivery by developing a clinically integrated network.  Clinical Integration (CI) is the coordination of health services across the continuum of care including disease prevention and wellness promotion, management of the acute care episode, chronic disease and medication optimization, and developing effective provider-payor relationships. The goal of CI is to improve the quality of care and health outcomes of the population, while containing costs of care delivery. By spending time with patients, practitioners, and healthcare leaders in each phase of the inpatient and outpatient care continuum, the student will gain understanding of the economics and management of value-based care delivery.  Along with patient care responsibilities the student will interact with senior executives and key members of the system management team. A designated CI leader will act as a mentor to the student. The student should expect to attend management meetings and leadership rounds, maintain a journal of experiences, and complete a specific CI project under the guidance of the mentor.

  • IDE 45080 - Global Health in Theory and Practice

    Cr Hrs: 6
    Session Length: 4 weeks

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours.  The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. As our global society becomes more interconnected, the need for global health training and culturally sensitive care has never been higher. A 2014 study by Drain et al. demonstrated the lasting benefits of international rotations on physician-in-trainings’ medical knowledge, physical examination skills, and motivation to practice among underserved and multicultural populations. This course will center around three core competencies: international clinical medicine, global public health, and international health systems. Students will develop a working knowledge of global medicine topics, possibly work with a professional healthcare team in an international/rural setting, and practice diagnosing and treating patients in resource-limited areas. This will facilitate students’ growth into more well-rounded, culturally-competent physicians. Students will participate in didactics, discussions, and independent inquiry into an aspect of global health they find particularly compelling. Additionally, they will explore opportunities to travel abroad and integrate into a medical team providing patient care in a resource-limited setting.

  • COM 20700 - M2 Culinary Medicine Elective

    Cr Hrs: 3 (2-3-0)
”Let Food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”  Hippocrates 400 BC. Culinary medicine takes this ancient idea and modernizes it through merging of medical science, nutrition, and culinary skill. In this course, students will examine the relationship between diet and chronic disease through studying the evidence-based principles of the Mediterranean Diet and using the translational core curriculum licensed by the Goldring Center of Culinary Medicine. The course objectives are to not only stimulate education in nutrition and preventative medicine, but also to develop the ability to confidently communicate nutrition to patients in understandable terms of food. This will be accomplished through the completion of 8 modules (6 with both online and Hands-on component and 2 with online and discussion) during the M2 Fall semester.

The six hands-on modules will include the following topics:

    1. Introduction to Culinary Medicine

    2. Weight Management

    3. Lipids

    4. Protein/Vegetarian diets

    5. Carbohydrates

    6. Sodium/ Potassium/ Hypertension

These 6 modules will consist of:

    1. Online component (2hrs each): Video review,

Articles, Quiz, and Exercise. Students will be encouraged to work in groups when preparing case study exercises to be discussed during hands on time

    2. Hands on (3hrs each):

Culinary hands-on will be technique driven emphasizing at least one core culinary skill per class with recipes chosen to reinforce topics

The other 2 of the 8 modules will be online component only without corresponding hand-on culinary class

    7. Food Allergies and Intolerance: Online material and group discussion

    8. Pediatric Diet: Online Material

In order to receive credit the student must complete all online coursework and quizzes, and attend hands-on classes. Absences are to be discussed and excused with faculty.  There will be a required pre- and post-survey.  Grading is pass/fail.

    Session Length: 8 weeks

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 12 credit hours. This 8 week Internal Medicine clerkship is required of all medical students. It consists of 6 weeks of inpatient experience and a 2 week ambulatory component. The student is an integral member of the team which may include an attending, residents and other students. Students will be exposed to a variety of medical conditions and care for internal medicine patients in the inpatient and outpatient realms. Goals include improving history and physical exam skills, written and oral case presentations, increasing fund of knowledge, clinical judgment and integration into the team and beginning patient care with improving differential diagnosis and management skills. There is a core conference series, covering important medicine topics. An observed H and P in an OSCE setting is done, and a NBME medicine shelf exam is required at the end of the rotation. The 3rd year clerk is an active participant on the team and in patient care and is encouraged to take as much responsibility for both patient care and their own learning as they are able. The goals and objectives for the Internal Medicine Clerkship are similar across all UT sites (Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville). At Memphis, each student is assigned to 2 hospitals which can include Methodist University, Baptist-East, Regional One Health, or the Veterans Administration Hospital, at Knoxville they are at UT Medical Center, at Chattanooga they are at Erlanger Medical Center, and at Nashville they are at St Thomas Midtown.
