  • ANAT 827 - Functional Neuroanatomy

    A lecture and Lab dealing with the structure and function of the mammalian central nervous system. The emphasis of the course is on human neuroanatomy, but comparisons are made with the rodent brain using the rat and mouse as model systems. The first one-third of the course provides a synopsis of core concepts and tools used in contemporary neuroanatomical research. This material focuses on an understanding of the principles underlying neuroanatomical approaches, as well as their advantages and potential pitfalls. The final two-thirds of the course covers the basic organization of the central nervous system, including in-depth consideration of its major sensory, motor, and limbic components. This part of the course includes laboratory study on the gross anatomy of the brain. An introductory course in neuroscience is highly recommended.

  • ANE 40100 - Junior Internship in Anesthesia Critical Care

    This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The student will learn the evidence based approach to treatment and diagnosis of the critically ill patient; the pathophysiology of common intensive care disease processes; and pharmacology pertinent to common critical illnesses. Student will learn the interpretation and utilization of common ICU lab and physiologic data. Students will follow up to 4 patients per day on service. As students demonstrate proficiency, they will gain more autonomy appropriate for level of training. Student is expected to attend weekly departmental conferences and ICU lectures. Informal teaching in the form of “chalk talks” and bedside teaching. Student will be on duty during weekdays from pre-rounding in the morning until night team handoff.

    This is a face to face clinical rotation.The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation.The intent of this rotation is to introduce interested and motivated students to various aspects of anesthesia practice. This will include: General anesthesia.Trauma anesthesia, Obstetrical anesthesia, Outpatient anesthesia, Acute Pain Service (APS), Cardiac and thoracic anesthesia Pediatric anesthesia, Transplant anesthesia, Neurosurgical anesthesia. Students will be assigned a contact at each hospital who will insert them into a clinical anesthesia team in the respective institution. At the completion of this elective rotation the student should have a grasp of fundamental aspects of anesthesia care and a basic understanding of the broad clinical range of anesthesia care.

    This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The medical student will be exposed to the various care experiences that require the services of anesthesiologists, from preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management, postoperative management, acute and chronic pain management.  Medical students will work with resident physicians and attending anesthesiologists across the spectrum of consultant anesthesiologist care, including preoperative evaluation in the PAT clinic (Preoperative Anesthesia Testing), cases in Obstetric Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Perioperative TEE, Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management, Chronic and Interventional Pain Management, Pediatric Anesthesia, Critical Care, and Ambulatory Anesthesia. While observation of various procedures and operations will be a considerable component of the rotation, medical students should anticipate and indeed expect to be engaged and participate in certain common procedures at the discretion of the attending anesthesiologist. Within these subspecialty areas, the medical student will have the opportunity to participate in simulation-based learning on airway management, central line placement, and arterial line placement, as well as applicable use of ultrasound guidance technology. The medical students are expected to be proactive in seeking opportunities to perform procedures appropriate with their training and under the supervision of and at the discretion of the attending anesthesiologist of record.

    This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3 or 6 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. Teaching and Learning Activities. Three methods are available to aid the students in meeting the course objectives and learning the basics of clinical anesthesia. Clinical - The students will be assigned to a clinical preceptor for each day. Preceptors will be nurse anesthetists and physician anesthesiologists working in the care team model. The students are expected to participate in all anesthetics and related activities in which his or her preceptor is involved. Didactic - Attendance at monthly departmental Grand Rounds/M&M Conference, held in the Anesthesia Conference Room, 6th Floor Chandler, on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 6:30 am is required.

    This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3 or 6 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. This elective provides an opportunity to experience the many facets of the practice of anesthesiology while emphasizing the role of the anesthesiologist as a perioperative physician. The main focus of the rotation is centered on supervised practical experience in the administration of intravenous, inhaled and regional anesthesia. Exposure to the anesthesiologist’s role in critical care medicine, acute and chronic pain management, obstetrical anesthesia and pre-operative evaluation is also provided.     This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The main goal by the end of this rotation is to provide the student with familiarity and proficiency with fundamental knowledge in acute pain management and skills in basic regional blocks. To ensure both quality patient care and the meeting of the above educational goals and objectives of this rotation, certain expectations will be made of both student physician and attending faculty. It is expected that the resident be an active participant in all procedures, management, follow-up, and organizational tasks involved in the care of patient perioperative pain management. It is expected that the student perform all duties outlined below in a timely manner as allowed by workflow.
