PERI 203 - Clinical Periodontology Cr Hrs: 3 (25-11-12)
This introductory course introduces students to the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis as well as the relative importance of local and systemic factors in the etiology of the periodontal lesion. Information is given regarding the histopathology, epidemiology, classification, diagnosis and management of periodontal diseases. Lectures and laboratory exercises are used to teach the concepts of periodontal instrumentation. A clinic clerkship follows that is designed to introduce students to the clinical procedures required in the management of the periodontal patient. Each student will perform a complete periodontal examination on a classmate, followed by scaling and polishing and disease control evaluation. Students will gain experience infection control, patient health assessment, clinical periodontal examination, data recording, treatment planning, initial periodontal treatment, and the evaluation of the results of this treatment.
