PED 45028 - Pediatric Infectious Diseases-LEB

Cr Hrs: 6
Session Length: 4 weeks

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. This elective offers the student hands-on experience in the diagnosis and treatment of children with both common and uncommon pediatric infectious diseases. In addition, the student learns the principles of effective and judicious use of antimicrobial agents and has the opportunity to hone his/her diagnostic skills by evaluating challenging cases. The third year student early in her/his third year will shadow interns and M4s while seeing patients and will have the opportunity to participate in the history and physical examination of new and existing inpatients and outpatients. The fourth year student (and some third year students choosing this elective later in her/his third year, will generally have first contact with new patients on the inpatient consultation service and will also evaluate selected outpatients. The Le Bonheur consultation service sees approximately 60-80 new inpatients per month. In addition, approximately 8-10 patients per week are evaluated in the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Clinic. The Infectious Disease Service works closely with the microbiology, virology and molecular diagnostics laboratories, the Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship programs at Le Bonheur, and the student will have educational opportunities in these areas. Students will also attend several weekly infectious disease conferences.
