IPEH 810 - Health Care and the Law: What Every Health Care Provider Should Know

This interdisciplinary course is designed for students in the health professions who treat patients. The course will provide a broad overview of the legal issues that will impact their professional practice every day. Students who complete this course will learn how to determine if there is a provider-patient relationship; how to obtain the appropriate consent; when it is permissible or required to disclose protected health information; the legal requirements of medical records; how to avoid lawsuits; how to deal with patients who are dying and their families; the legal issues of treating patients with communicable diseases, the legal issues of treating patients who have a mental illness; business aspects of a health profession; and prescribing practices.
