IDE 45080 - Global Health in Theory and Practice
Cr Hrs: 6 Session Length: 4 weeks
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. As our global society becomes more interconnected, the need for global health training and culturally sensitive care has never been higher. A 2014 study by Drain et al. demonstrated the lasting benefits of international rotations on physician-in-trainings’ medical knowledge, physical examination skills, and motivation to practice among underserved and multicultural populations. This course will center around three core competencies: international clinical medicine, global public health, and international health systems. Students will develop a working knowledge of global medicine topics, possibly work with a professional healthcare team in an international/rural setting, and practice diagnosing and treating patients in resource-limited areas. This will facilitate students’ growth into more well-rounded, culturally-competent physicians. Students will participate in didactics, discussions, and independent inquiry into an aspect of global health they find particularly compelling. Additionally, they will explore opportunities to travel abroad and integrate into a medical team providing patient care in a resource-limited setting.
