SUR 40143 - Junior Internship in Pediatric Surgery

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The Pediatric Surgery JI is a very busy clinical rotation at one of the busiest pediatric hospitals in the Southeast. The M4 student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy and recommended only for those seriously considering general surgery and/or pediatric surgery subspecialty as a career. The student will undertake an advanced clinical role in pediatric patient care under the direct supervision of the pediatric surgery faculty with exposure to pediatric surgery, trauma and NICU/PICU patients. The student will acquire skill in bedside clinical procedures and be expected to participate in daily/weekly conferences with pediatric surgery staff, fellows and residents. M3 students also rotate on service as a portion of their general surgery core rotation, it is expected that the M4 JI will have increased patient load and responsibilities than those of the M3 rotation. Patient exposure will be exclusively at Le Bonheur with a robust clinical experience and operative exposure to a variety of pediatric disease related processes. Students will gain insight and experience in the surgical and medical management of pediatric diseases such as pyloric stenosis, intussusception, necrotizing enterocolitis, Hirschsprung’s, a variety of congenital malformations, surgical management of pediatric conditions such as appendicitis, reflux (Nissen procedures), G tube management, hernia management as well as a variety of others. Given the regional referral location and level of care offered, exposure to pediatric trauma is also a large component of this rotation experience, particularly in warmer months. Lastly, there is a significant critical care component with experience in complex ventilatory management, ECMO, hemodynamic, nutritional and antibiotic management for neonatal and pediatric patients.
