SUR 45051 - Breast Surgical Oncology
Cr Hrs: 6 Session Length: 4 weeks
PD
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The Breast Surgical Oncology Elective is designed to give students a look at the multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer care and recommended only for those seriously considering general surgery and/or subspecialty. The student will undertake an advanced clinical role in patient care under the direct supervision of the breast surgeon and gain an appreciation for the complex surgical decision making, risk assessment, surgical planning and preparation and postoperative care for breast cancer patients. Students will have exposure to other specialties including radiology, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and plastic surgeons who care for patients. Patient exposure will take place in a variety of outpatient and inpatient settings. This rotation is designed as an apprenticeship model where the student will work directly with the breast surgeon, with occasional surgical oncology fellow and/or resident involvement. Students will gain a deeper understanding in the complex management of benign and malignant breast disease processes. This rotation has a very robust technical and operative exposure as well as a thorough clinic component managing the preoperative, postoperative and oncologic surveillance aspects of breast disease.
