Over 600 disorders strike the human nervous systems and afflict approximately 50 million people in the US each year. This course is designed to provide graduate students with knowledges in the development of new therapies for disorders in the nervous systems and translational efforts that attempt to bridge the gap between findings in basic neuroscience research and clinical innovations. The main topics covered in the course include in-depth understanding of neuropathogenesis, therapeutic targets, and pharmacotherapies. The course also focuses on the breathtaking progresses that are revolutionizing treatment for the most common and devastating neurological disorders, which include but are not limited to stroke, epilepsy, headache, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, Huntington’s disease, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, etc. Specific sections of the course will also be dedicated to the marked advances in identifying novel biomarkers and experimental models.
