IDE 45030 - Heartstrings: Humanism & Reflection in Medicine
Cr Hrs: 3 Session Length: 2 weeks
PD
This is an online elective receiving 3 credit hours. The Heartstrings elective strives to integrate and reinforce the humanistic aspects of medicine and promote a well-rounded education for medical students. Medical school and further training while pivotal and exciting times are also times of immense stress. The poor mental health of trainees, characterized by high rates of burnout, depression, and suicidal ideation, is a growing concern. There is paucity in the literature on curricula that address how to take care of the soul of both the patient and the physician. This elective will also address how to live while journeying through medical school. eg. how to identify individual stress and colleague stress; tools to assist recharging in real time; creating brave spaces that are safe and promote belonging; improving the balance of civil, respectful social encounters occurring during a workday. The curriculum will be emergent based on the identified lerner needs. The evidence- based interactive and experiential course will provide hands-on learning opportunities. Through self and shared reflection, worksheets, storytelling and facilitated discussions, participants will trace their own journey, and re-connect with the passion for their cause. Sessions include interactive lectures, facilitated discussions, small group activities, reflective writing exercises, visits to art galleries or museums, and engaging with patient narratives. The sessions should provide opportunities for students to reflect on their personal values and beliefs, and how they relate to their future role as healthcare professionals. Guest speakers, such as practicing physicians, ethicists, artists, and patients, could be invited to share their perspectives and experiences.
