SUR 30000 - Core Clerkship in Surgery (Knoxville)
Cr Hrs: 12 Session Length: 8 weeks

This is a face-to-face clinical rotation receiving 12 credit hours. This eight-week clerkship encompasses time spent on core General Surgery services which can include Acute Care, Minimally Invasive, Trauma, Surgical Oncology, Colorectal, and Vascular Surgery. The rotation consists of two 3-week blocks one of the previously mentioned services as well as a 2-week elective at the end of the block which can also include ENT, Urology, Orthopedics, PM&R, Plastics, Transplant, Anesthesia, and ICU, upon request and with approval from those departments. The objective of this clerkship is to familiarize the student with the basic pathophysiologic, diagnostic, and therapeutic modalities involved in the art and science of surgery. The fundamentals taught in this rotation will be of benefit to students even if they do not choose a field of surgery as a career. Clinical experience includes time spent in the OR, inpatient care, and outpatient clinic. In addition to the clinical involvement, each student is involved in several small group conferences as well as a didactic lecture series delivered by members of the faculty, skills labs, and grand rounds sessions. This clerkship, with similar experiences, is also offered in Memphis, Chattanooga, and Nashville.
