ORTH 102 - Craniofacial Growth, Human Development and Development of Occlusion

The course familiarizes students with major concepts and supporting evidence concerning human growth and development. Emphasis is on the development of concepts. In addition, the Lecture provides a comprehensive study of the craniofacial structures. While embryology of the structures is reviewed, the focus is on postnatal development. Also the development of normal and ideal occlusions and of malocclusions is studied in this course. Initial discussion includes the normal development and eruption of the primary, mixed, and permanent dentitions, normal maturation of the orofacial musculature, and the physiology of occlusion. Lectures then cover the incidence, affected sites, sequelae, and etiologic factors that may be involved in the development of malocclusions.
