ANE 40120 - Junior Internship in Anesthesiology
Cr Hrs: 6 Session Length: 4 weeks
PD
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The medical student will be exposed to the various care experiences that require the services of anesthesiologists, from preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management, postoperative management, acute and chronic pain management. Medical students will work with resident physicians and attending anesthesiologists across the spectrum of consultant anesthesiologist care, including preoperative evaluation in the PAT clinic (Preoperative Anesthesia Testing), cases in Obstetric Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Perioperative TEE, Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management, Chronic and Interventional Pain Management, Pediatric Anesthesia, Critical Care, and Ambulatory Anesthesia. While observation of various procedures and operations will be a considerable component of the rotation, medical students should anticipate and indeed expect to be engaged and participate in certain common procedures at the discretion of the attending anesthesiologist. Within these subspecialty areas, the medical student will have the opportunity to participate in simulation-based learning on airway management, central line placement, and arterial line placement, as well as applicable use of ultrasound guidance technology. The medical students are expected to be proactive in seeking opportunities to perform procedures appropriate with their training and under the supervision of and at the discretion of the attending anesthesiologist of record. Between June - December (Blocks 5 - 12), Anesthesia Specialty Only. All other specialties are welcome to rotate after completion of interview season during Blocks 1-4. We are no longer using the term “audition rotation” for any student. This is an Anesthesia Medical Student rotation and does not imply or guarantee an interview. JI ANES rotators will be required to present a short presentation at end of rotation to faculty and/or residents over an assigned topic of something they have learned. Details to follow. JI ANES rotators will take no more than two on-call shifts or partial on-call shifts while on 4-week rotation to experience weekend shifts and 24-hour shifts. Post call time off will be worked into the schedule.
