SUR 35090 - Thoracic Surgery - MUH CE

This is a face to face clinical rotation. This career exploration course (CE) will allow third year medical students to explore this discipline as a potential career choice. The student will learn the fundamentals of thoracic surgical disease (non cardiac). The student will learn the clinical presentation, diagnostic work up and treatment of both benign and malignant diseases of the lungs, esophagus, trachea, mediastinum and chest wall. Under supervision, the student will evaluate and care for patients during office clinics, in the emergency room, and on the hospital wards. The student can spend time in the operating room, learning and assisting during thoracic surgical procedures. Time may also be spent with other specialties caring for the thoracic oncology patient, such as medical oncology, radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, pulmonary medicine and pathology. The student will attend and participate at weekly thoracic service teaching sessions. The student will attend weekly multidisciplinary thoracic oncology tumor board and clinic.
Night/weekend call is not required. During the night/weekend, the student may elect to be called to evaluate and care for patients with thoracic emergencies and the student may elect to be called to assist/observe during emergent thoracic procedures.
