PMR 35001 - PM&R/Spinal Cord Injury CE

This is a face to face clinical rotation. This career exploration course (CE) will allow third year medical students to explore this discipline as a potential career choice. Students will be expected to display a fund of knowledge consistent with his/her level of training, demonstrate self-directed learning, thoroughness, consistency and reliability, and relate well to families, team members, and patients. The student’s level of patient care responsibility will be determined based on the student’s skill level, and at the discretion of the supervising attending. The students start at 8:00am doing morning round with attending and come up with plan of care for their patients. They will write the daily note, H&P, order labs, consults and radiology requests. The attending will sign off on the labs, consults and radiology requests. They communicate with other services if consult is needed. Students participate in Rehab meeting on Tuesdays and discharge meeting on Wednesdays. Students participate in at least two lectures a week. During this rotation the students will learn about ASIA classification for patients with spinal cord injury. They will learn about approaching to new spinal cord injury and some of the common problem in chronic spinal cord injury. During this rotation students will learn about field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. They also learn about interdisciplinary approach to the patient with disability mainly spinal cord injury.
