COM 10710 - Medical Student Experience in Neurology

Cr Hrs: 3 40-4-40
Session Length: 2 weeks

PD

The MSEN program is based around providing an introductory experience to the science and
practice of neurology as a specialty. As students are not typically exposed to neurology until late
into their MS2 year, many students are unaware of the potential roles and experiences neurology
fulfills. MSEN is, therefore, designed to provide a clinically founded opportunity for students to
explore potential interests in various subspecialties in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
This program will consist of shadowing practicing neurology residents and attending physicians
as well as lectures and discussions intended to provide introductions to clinical topics students
will see while in their clinical shadowing, and eventually in the medical school classroom. In
order to provide the most clinically relevant experience, students will also be expected to present
at least one case in a traditional H&P format, and will participate in two “Morning Report” style
case discussions provided by the instructors. These experiences will serve to provide a brief, yet
broad, overview of the current practice of neurology and the role of the neurologist in modern
medical practice.
