ASP 528 - Basal Ganglia Function and Dysfunction in Speech Production

Technologic advances in neurophysiologic methods for studying the basal ganglia have revolutionized our understanding of what the basal ganglia do and why basal ganglia pathologies produce such a wide range of symptoms. These advances have important implications for our understanding of basal ganglia functions for speech communication and how speech pathologists treat communication disorders in patients with basal ganglia disorders. The proposed course will address recent research findings regarding basal ganglia function and prepare students for new treatments innovations in the area of basal ganglia speech disorders. Topics to be covered: Research advances in in the areas of affective, cognitive and motor functions/disorders of the basal ganglia, theories and models of movement impairments in Parkinson’s disease, contemporary accounts of communication deficits in Parkinson’s disease, current treatments for speech deficits in Parkinson’s disease.
