PED 40105 - Junior Internship in NICU
Cr Hrs: 6 Session Length: 4 weeks

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. Senior medical students have the opportunity to care for critically ill newborns in Erlanger’s 64 bed, level IV NICU. Students will function at the level of an intern (attend deliveries, formulate independent assessment/plan for each patient, communicate with families and team, perform handovers, document in medical chart, enter orders in EMR - must be cosigned by resident or attending). Students will have opportunities to observe and assist with procedures as well as participate in simulation sessions. Overarching goals are for students to gain skills in neonatal resuscitation including delivery room management; recognize and develop plan for neonatal respiratory distress; demonstrate competency in managing fluids, electrolytes, and feeds in premature infants; and demonstrate understanding of sepsis evaluation in newborn infants.
