PHCY 5049 - Professional Studies in Veterinary Pharmacy

In this course, students experience learning activities to develop skills in patient-centered care of veterinary patients while serving as a collaborative interprofessional team-member. This course introduces basic concepts of pharmacology and medicinal chemistry particularly as applied to veterinary pharmacy. It also focuses on providing patient-centered care to patients who have veterinary pharmacy issues. Learners will develop, integrate, and apply knowledge from the foundational disciplines (e.g., pharmaceutical, and clinical sciences) and apply the professional studies in veterinary pharmacy in solving case-based scenarios of patients with veterinary pharmacy issues. Upon completion of this course, the pharmacy student will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge and training to accurately interpret veterinary prescriptions, offer drug information consultations to veterinarians, council pet owners regarding appropriate drug administration and potential drug events, and legally and ethically compound and/or dispense medications for non-human patients.
