OMFS/MD Program

The College of Medicine sponsors a track in which oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) residents, based on the Knoxville campus, may enter a 6-year program to also receive the MD degree. The students complete the first year of their OMFS residency, enter the MD portion of the program at the mid-point of the typical M1 spring semester (the start of the organ systems curriculum), and return to the residency program upon completion of the MD degree requirements. The residency component includes both OMFS and general surgery rotations. The track can be distinguished from a dual degree program, such as the MD/PhD dual degree program, because the matriculants are residents, not students, in the OMFS phase of the track.
