Students may be eligible for loans and scholarship awards from various sources. Individuals in need of financial assistance must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered for loans or scholarships available through the university. The FAFSA can be accessed at http://www.uthsc.edu/finaid/. Students are encouraged to explore external sources of financial assistance through their employers, service clubs, and professional organizations.

Scholarships
There are a number of College-wide and program-specific scholarships available to students in the College of Health Professions.
Chancellor’s Scholarship
Each program in the college offers at least one scholarship. Amounts are based upon available funds. Recipients are selected by each program. The Chancellor’s Scholarship was created to provide opportunities and funding for students from under-represented populations to receive financial support to begin or continue their academic progression at UTHSC. Criteria include:
- Fully meeting the minimum academic standards for the program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Providing financial aid with all required documentation to receive the award (FAFSA, etc.)
This is an achievement award and is not need based so the EFC (expected family contribution) is not a factor in the awarding of this scholarship.
(UT National Alumni Association) UTNAA Scholarship
Nominations are requested in April and due May 1. All programs are encouraged to nominate incoming students. The College committee selects one student and one or two alternates in rank order in case selected student declines. Assistant/associate dean for student affairs forwards the selected student(s) to the Office of Financial Aid who then notifies the Alumni Association.
Audiology and Speech Pathology
Annette Brown Memorial Downtown SERTOMA Club Endowment.
The Department of ASP selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria for the scholarship include financial need, successful academic performance. Students who held this scholarship in previous year(s) shall be given preference.
ASP 100 Club
The purpose of this account is for scholarship awards for students based on criteria as determined by the department. Preference for the award is given to graduate students. The department chair is the primary person responsible for the account and distribution of funds.
Audiology Scholarship Fund
Scholarship selection committee in ASP in consultation with the department chair will select the recipient(s). Criteria include graduate student in audiology, successful academic performance, financial need, evidence of high moral character, dedication to work, willingness to conform to the rules of student conduct. Previous year recipients are given preference.
Dr. Bill Helms Scholarship Endowment. Department’s scholarship committee selects recipient(s) and amounts. Criteria include currently enrolled or admitted students to the UTHSC College of Health Professions pursuing a major in the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology who demonstrate successful academic performance. Financial need may be considered.
Cheryl D. Gunter Professional Development Endowment. Utilized to support conference attendance for students in goodstanding and majoring in the undergraduate degree program offered within ASP. Criteria include admission to or enrollment in the undergraduate major, excellent academic performance, and financial need may be considered. If there is no eligible undergraduate student, a graduate student earning a degree in ASP may be considered.
Davidson Scholarship
The Department of ASP selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria for the scholarship include financial need, successful academic performance and pursuit of a major in Audiology unless all qualified students in audiology are receiving financial support. Students who held the Davidson scholarship in previous years(s) shall be given preference.
Deborah King Fellowship Fund
The Department of ASP selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria for the scholarship includes financial need, must be a graduate student majoring in speech pathology and demonstrate successful academic performance. Previous year recipients shall be given preference. Available to students living within the jurisdiction of Knoxville, Scottish Rite (Counties: Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi, Union and Washington)
Denise Descouzis Endowed Audiology Student Travel Scholarship. The department chair will choose the recipient(s) and amount. Criteria include students who are currently enrolled in a graduate degree Audiology program who are in good academic standing, have an accepted presentation (podium talk or poster) at a conference related to audiology. Preference will be given to applicants who present subjects that include, but are not limited to: hearing conservation, innovative advances in the field of Audiology and its profession, serving underprivileged populations in the area, and preschool screenings (vision/hearing/speech, as defined by state/national laws).
Ethel Piper Scholarship
The Department of ASP selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria for the scholarship include financial need (in the broadest sense), successful academic performance, preparation to children with communication disorders upon graduation, and a requirement to assist in departmental activities as assigned by the Head of the Department up to a maximum of five hours per week. Previous year recipients shall be given preference.
Harold A. Luper Fund/Scholarship
The Department of ASP selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria for the scholarship includes financial need and be a graduate student in ASP.
Jerry Carney/ASHA Leadership Scholarship Endowment
The Department of ASP selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria for the scholarship include successful academic performance. Financial need (in the broadest sense) may be a factor. Recipients from previous years are eligible for selection in subsequent years.
Judy D. Haston Scholarship Quasi-Endowment. Department selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria include graduate students who are currently enrolled or have been admitted to UTHSC majoring in a graduate degree program offered within the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology and have demonstrated successful academic performance. Previous year recipients shall be given preference.
Leigh Chesney Barnes Masters in Speech Language Pathology Scholarship Endowment. Department selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria include graduate students who are currently enrolled in the M.S. SLP program who have demonstrated successful academic performance. Preference given to TN residents. Financial need should be considered. Previous year recipients shall be given preference. (If no MS SLP students are eligible, preference should be given to Ph.D. students in SLP and then Doctor of Audiology Students.)
Mary A. Jones Scholarship
The Department of ASP selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria for the scholarship include financial need and successful academic performance.
Dr. Samuel B. Burchfield Scholarship Endowment. The scholarship committee will choose the recipient(s) and amount. Criteria include currently enrolled students in the UTHSC Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology, pursuing a major in audiology, who demonstrate successful academic performance. Financial need may be considered.
Silverstein Endowment Fund
The Department of ASP selects recipient(s) and amount. Awards should be used to benefit students in ASP by supporting student travel to professional conferences and to recognize outstanding clinical students, who in their first year of graduate school, have worked with children
Sol Adler Memorial Fund
The Department of ASP selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria for the scholarship include financial need. First preference is given to PhD students majoring in one of the following areas:
- Language disorders in children
- Multicultural aspects of language and language disorders
- Clinical service delivery to children in unique populations
Secondary preference will be given to master’s students in the same areas of study listed above.
Third preference to undergraduates in Audiology and Speech Pathology who have demonstrated satisfactory academic performance. Students who have held the scholarship in the past shall be given preference in subsequent years.
Sydney Rae Sloan Scholarship Endowment. The department chair will choose the recipient(s) and amount. Criteria include students who are currently enrolled in the UTHSC Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology. Preference may be given to a graduate of UTK and/or a student who is/was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority.
Tamika Catchings Scholarship Endowment. Department selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria include graduate students who are currently enrolled or have been admitted to UTHSC majoring in a graduate degree program offered within the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology who have demonstrated successful academic performance. Preference given to students with financial need and whose clinical focus is on working with individuals with hearing loss. Previous year recipients shall be given preference.
Cytopathology
Erickson-Rube
This scholarship is for cytopathology practice students. The program scholarship committee selects one or more students for the award. Selection criteria include financial need, merit and dedication to the profession. The amount awarded and the number of awards depends on available funds as determined by the committee.
Health Informatics and Information Management
McCain Bowman Endowment Fund
The Health Informatics and information Management program faculty select recipients and amount of the award. Awards are used to benefit HIIM students by supporting student travel to professional conferences.
Medical Laboratory Sciences
Ann Bell Award
This award is for medical laboratory science students and may be renewed for a second year. The program scholarship committee selects one or more students and the amount which is based on available funds as determined by the committee. Selection criteria include successful academic performance, application date, and demonstrated interest in the profession.
Elam Award
This award is for medical laboratory science students. The program scholarship committee selects the students to receive the award. The Financial Aid Office provides the amount of scholarship available. Students are considered for this award who have demonstrated exceptional scholastic ability, leadership, and dedication to a career as a health care professional.
Elizabeth Club Scholarship
Recipients are selected by the programs. This has traditionally been one scholarship per year for students entering into medical laboratory sciences and DPT, with selection preference being given to Tennessee residents. For female students only, this can be awarded later in the academic year to permit better selection of recipients. The Financial Aid Office determines the amount of the scholarship.
Loretta Cox Stuckey Endowed Scholarship
This award is for medical laboratory science students and may be renewed for a second year. The program scholarship committee selects one or more students for the award. In recognition of Mrs. Loretta Cox Stuckey’s desire to help students from her home state, the selection committee will first consider qualified residents of the State of Arkansas. If there are no qualified residents from Arkansas, the committee must consider students from Louisiana. If there are no qualified students from Arkansas or Louisiana, other qualified candidates will be considered. In addition to residency requirements, students must demonstrate a successful academic performance and financial need will be considered. The amount awarded and the number of awards depends on available funds as determined by the committee.
Occupational Therapy
Lori Maloy Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship is open to all accepted and enrolled MOT students. The program faculty select the student and amount which is based on available funds as determined by department official. The recipient is selected on the basis of financial need and dedication to the profession. Traditionally, selection is made from the MOTII class and it may be awarded at any time in the student’s matriculation.
Rachel Kay Stevens Scholarship
This scholarship is open to all enrolled OT students. Criteria for the scholarship include involvement with Rachel Kay Stevens Therapy Center; RKS Board officers have priority and demonstration of successful academic performance and professionalism. Additional criteria include a student holding the Rachel Kay Stevens Scholarship in one year shall have preference in receiving the award in subsequent years, financial need may be considered and preference will be given to students with current permanent residency in Arkansas. If none of the applicants are from Arkansas, priority will be given to students with residency from out-of-state (other than from Tennessee).
Physical Therapy
Ann Craig Scholarship in Physical Therapy
This scholarship is for students accepted for admission into the DPT program. Scholarship monies are provided for all three years of enrollment, as long as the recipient continues to demonstrate academic achievement, leadership potential, and commitment to the art and science of the Physical Therapy profession. The scholarship is available only to first generation college applicants. Department selects student and amount which is based upon available funds as determined by department official.
Lori Maloy Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship is open to all accepted and enrolled MOT students. The program faculty select the student and amount which is based on available funds as determined by department official. The recipient is selected on the basis of financial need and dedication to the profession. Traditionally, selection is made from the MOTII class and it may be awarded at any time in the student’s matriculation.
Margaret and Perry Ayers Scholarship
This scholarship is for a student accepted or currently enrolled into the DPT program. Criteria for the scholarship includes successful academic performance, and demonstration of exceptional interpersonal skills with classmates, faculty and patients. Department selects student enrolled in his or her third year of the DPT Program. The amount is based upon available funds as determined by Chair. Financial need may be considered.
Mitzi Zeno Award
This award is for second year students in the PT program with successful academic performance. Preference will be given to students who intend to practice in a neuro-rehabilitation setting upon graduation. Financial need may also be considered. The department chair will determine the amount of the award on an annual basis.
Physical Therapy Alumni and Friends Scholarship
This scholarship is for students accepted or currently enrolled into the DPT program. Department selects recipient(s) and amount. Criteria for the scholarship include financial need, successful academic performance and pursuit of a non-traditional route for entry into the program. Although the scholarship is awarded for only one year, previous recipients are given preference of selection in subsequent years.
Loans
College Student Emergency Loan
Any student with a documented need for a short-term loan may apply for assistance from the College emergency loan fund. Loans must be repaid within 30 days with repayment, including interest, calculated at six percent per annum. The maximum loan amount that can be authorized is determined by funds available in the account at the time the request is submitted.
