PED3 4009/F - Clinical Genetics




Cr Hrs: 3.5, 7
Session Length: 2 and 4 weeks

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3.5 or 7 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. Student will learn to obtain pertinent medical and family history, how to perform a dysmorphology examination, and draw a detailed pedigree. The student will become familiar with a variety of genetic disorders as well as the genetic implications of a wide range of birth defects. A genetic lab experience is included during which the student will learn about chromosome analysis, FISH, and microarray analysis techniques. The student will have the opportunity to perform his/her own karyotype. The student will learn how to approach examination of fetuses with birth defects and learn to calculate genetic risks of recurrence of various disorders. The student will have some responsibility for 20-25 patients per week by performing detailed medical and family histories, physical exams, drawing the pedigree. Every patient is seen with the attending physician. Weekly conferences on a variety of pediatric topics are available.
