SUR 30000 - Core Clerkship in Surgery (Knoxville)

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 12 credit hours. This eight-week clerkship encompasses General, Minimally Invasive, Emergency General, Vascular, Cardiothoracic, Transplant, Pediatric, and Trauma Surgery with options for ENT, Neurosurgery, Urology and Orthopedics upon request and with approval from those departments. The objective of this clerkship is to familiarize the student with the basic pathophysiologic, diagnostic and therapeutic modalities involved in the art and science of surgery. The fundamentals taught in this rotation will be of benefit to students even if they do not choose a field of surgery as a career. In addition to the clinical involvement, each student is involved in several small group conferences as well as a didactic lecture series delivered by members of the faculty. The student is also involved in several skills labs as well as student presentations, basic science conferences, grand rounds sessions, and some outpatient participation. This clerkship, with similar experiences, is also offered in Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville.
