Cr Hrs: 6 Session Length: 4 weeks
PD
This is a clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. Children’s Hospital at Erlanger is a full member of the Children’s Oncology Group, seeing 50 new oncology patients annually, and is also the Southeast Tennessee Regional Comprehensive Center for hemoglobinopathies and coagulation disorders. This elective will provide the senior medical student with an immersion experience in outpatient pediatric hematology and oncology. Students will learn diagnostic workup for single and multiple-line cytopenias, lymphadenopathy, coagulation disorders, and childhood malignancies. Students will perform lumbar punctures before attendings provide intrathecal chemotherapy administration, central venous catheter access and care, and bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. Training is given in the interpretation of common findings on peripheral blood smears during patient encounters. Students follow a panel of outpatient hematology and oncology patients on a continuity basis for the 4 weeks of their elective, covering a broad variety of common childhood blood disorders and malignancies.
