PAT 45025 - Forensic Science/Autopsy
Cr Hrs: 6 Session Length: 4 weeks
PD
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. This elective is intended for any medical student who is interested in exposure to forensic pathology. Forensic pathology is a medical subspecialty that applies medical knowledge in order to answer questions that arise in the legal system regarding an individual’s death. Forensic pathologists have received additional medical training in order to make determinations regarding the cause of death, the manner of death, the mechanism(s) of death, the timing of injury and death, and how injuries occurred. Forensic pathologists collect evidence from the body and personal property and give expert testimony. The medicolegal autopsy is a powerful tool at the disposal of the forensic pathologist to answer these questions, in addition to review of the medical records, scene circumstances, toxicology, and other ancillary studies. This rotation is primarily an observership intended to provide exposure to forensic pathology and to how a regional forensic center operates, but some hands-on experience with the autopsy procedure may occur depending on the type of case and student interest. The medical student will attend the morning report at 07:00 hours and be present in the autopsy suite during the weekdays. There will be no night or weekend call and no attendance during the weekends
