PED 45060 - Molecular Medicine

Cr Hrs: 6
Session Length: 4 weeks

PD

This is an online 4 week elective receiving 6 credit hours. The single biggest advancement in medicine of the past 30 years has been the advent of molecular techniques in research, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. In order for physicians to understand and practice medicine in the 21st century, a working knowledge of molecular aspects of medicine is required. This course is designed to teach the fourth-year medical student some basics of molecular biology and teach how molecular techniques are being employed to diagnose and treat disease. Interpretation of medical literature that uses molecular techniques will be stressed. Lectures will focus on diseases that have been well characterized at the molecular level. Forensic use of DNA will also be featured. This course will have 4-5 lectures per week in addition to student journal presentations. Each student will be obliged to give a presentation on 1-2 clinical/scientific journal articles that employ molecular techniques to the class (the number of presentations will depend upon the number of students who sign up). Students who have taken this course in the past have stated that after taking the course they were comfortable reading medical literature that used molecular techniques. The course is not limited in class size. This course is pass-fail.
