SUR 40133 - Junior Internship in Trauma Consult

Cr Hrs: 6
Session Length: 4 weeks

PD

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours.  The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The Trauma Consult JI is an intense clinical rotation in which the M4 student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and recommended only for those seriously considering general surgery and/or subspecialty.  The Trauma Consult JI is a different rotation from the TICU JI in that the M4 will primarily work with the intake/triage trauma resident (PGY 2 or 3) assessing patients in the CCA and Trauma Bay.  The student will undertake an advanced clinical role in patient care under the direct supervision of the trauma faculty with exposure to general surgery and trauma patients.  The student will acquire skill in bedside clinical procedures and be expected to participate in daily/weekly conferences with trauma staff, fellows and residents.
Patient exposure will be exclusively at Regional One Health with a robust experience and exposure to blunt and penetrating trauma at one of the busiest trauma centers in the country.  Students will gain insight and experience in the initial evaluation of trauma patients, management of multiple system injury victims, diagnostic studies and an immersive operative exposure.  Furthermore, there is a significant critical care component with experience in complex ventilatory management, hemodynamic, nutritional and antibiotic management for trauma patients.
