COM 45040 - Medical Spanish and Culture

This course, is an integrated three-week, 1.5 credit hour online experience that will be offered in July of the Fall semester that merges language proficiency, medical insights, and sociocultural context with a focus on Spanish for healthcare settings. Students must have completed COM 45020 to enroll in COM 45040. The course aspires to enhance students’ grasp of health disparities, Entrustable Professional Activities, and culture-conscious communication, driving effective interactions with Spanish-speaking patients. The course will consist of online, didactic, and collaborative learning experiences where students will delve into an immersive Spanish language learning journey, honing their competency to interact proficiently and synergize with interpreters. The course will foster an increased understanding of cultural nuances influencing the healthcare experiences of Spanish-speaking populations. The first half of the course is offered in the Spring semester and the second half in the Fall semester.
